Runtime: 109 minutes

A film that grows beyond the borders of its original premise, Debra Granik’s sensitive but unsparing adaptation of Peter Rock’s novel opens in a Portland state park: Will (Ben Foster) lives there with his daughter Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie). They are self-sufficient, enveloped by the sounds of nature and tied together by a tight bond. Still, there are moments of unease — Will, a veteran, is suffering from the effects of PTSD, and their presence in the park is illegal, a law that will come to rupture their story.
